Will Macau Experience a Business Boom in 2024?
By Shane Addinall Jan 10, 2024 IndustryMacau had a great year in 2023 with a massive gross gaming revenue growth showing big promise for 2024. With a predicted growth of 28% in GGR, Macau could have the best year post-pandemic.Macau is looking forward to a bright 2024, with the most recent stats and numbers showing promise for the future.
The year 2023 ended on a high note for Macau as they brought in a massive gross gaming revenue of $22.7 billion. These figures show that there has been an impressive year-on-year increase of 334% for the Macau gaming industry.
Looking Back at 2023
The recent growth proves the sector's recovery as the region dedicates efforts to expanding and opening up. This comes after various challenges for businesses due to the pandemic.
These numbers have triggered a stipulation that requires the six major operators in Macau to raise their spending on non-gaming investments by 20%.
The sector continues to adapt, and many anticipate that the numbers will stabilise during 2024. This indicates that it will reach a state of normality and steady growth.
This all culminated in a promising year-end as the region seeks to uplift tourism and Macau's global output. These results are considered highly impressive, given that the Chinese gambling market has seen a slower period of growth at the same time.
Optimistic Market Growth
Reports state that the tourism boost of the gaming sector has managed to overshadow that of any other Chinese industry. The local statistics bureau, DSEC, mentioned that the country got to enjoy a promising year of economic growth, especially during the third quarter of 2023.
The Las Vegas Sands Chair and CEO, Robert Goldstein, is very optimistic about the market growth as their firm continues expanding across Asia. He says that they believe in the growth of the Macau market in the short and long term.
The company has invested around $15 billion in Macau, which they consider the most important land-based market globally. The third quarter EBITDA shows strong growth in comparison to the previous quarters. Goldstein also mentioned that their current retail business in Macau is already exceeding its pre-COVID numbers.
A Bright 2024 Predicted for Macau
According to Morgan Stanley, the Macau Gaming Sector has a bright year ahead as it is believed the companies will elevate their non-gaming investments.
Analysts at the bank say they expect the Macau gambling companies to follow the government in increasing the wagers by two to three per cent in 2024. The belief is that companies will accelerate their non-gaming spending this year.
The prediction is that Macau's gaming industry will see a 28% growth in gross gaming revenue in 2024.
One of the main reasons for the prediction is that the GGR tends to be lower during December, which turned out to be the second-highest monthly revenue for 2023. Which is a clear indication of the industry's upward trajectory.
Challenges to Consider
Things are not just sunshine and roses, as there are some challenges to take into consideration, too.
The introduction of the Chinese authority's digital currency may have an impact on VIP gamblers and lead to a drop in the VIP sector. Then there are the competitors emerging from regions like Japan, Thailand and the Philippines.
Despite these challenges, it's still expected that the GGR for 2023 will see a 28% growth, marking 2024 as a year of great recovery for the Macau gaming industry.
