Italian Players Continue to Boost Online Casino Revenues

Online casinos and slots remain top performers in the Mediterranean country.Italy experienced another record month with online casino revenues as the vertical continues to boost the country’s economy and gaming industry. Total revenues across online gambling verticals reached €324.9m with online casinos accounting for half of the turnover.
January’s GGR of €324.9m brings Italy their highest figures in the past eight months. Although it is 3.3% lower than revenues recorded in January 2021, it is the fifth-highest figure in the history of the country’s online market. Revenues for online sports betting improved slightly, with poker and bingo figures showing positive growth as well.
The promising improvements in the Italian gaming market come as the country moves out of its winter, which is traditionally the season with the highest revenues.
Record Online Casino Revenues
Gross gaming revenues (GGR) for the online casino and slot segment recorded their highest amount to date with €171m for January. The same period in 2021 recorded revenues of €134m, indicating growth of more than 27% year-on-year. Online Casino revenues for January were 5% higher than the previous record amount of €165.5m and over 100% higher than two years ago.
Italian sports betting revenues in the online and retail sector improved from €204.8m in December to €211m in January. Online sportsbooks recorded a GGR of €128.8m for January, which is an incremental uptick from December 2021. In comparison with the same period a year ago, Italian online sportsbooks experienced a 10% decrease in turnover.
Retail betting outlets which were closed during January 2021 turned €82.2m in GGR for the first month of 2022, contributing to the division’s second-best January of all time. Online sports betting accounts for 39.66% of Italy’s gaming industry, while casino and slot revenues contribute 52.6% to the country’s GGR.
Bingo revenues showed 5% growth from December 2021 with €6.1m recorded in January and both poker tournaments and poker cash verticals had increased revenue. Poker tournaments recorded a monthly GGR of €11.4m and cash poker turned revenues of €7.5m for the month.
Leading Operators in Italian Gambling
The usual suspects are playing musical chairs with market share in the casino and slot segment with Pokerstars out top again. Neck and neck with less than a 10% gap is Playtech subsidiary, Snai with an 8.79% market share. Soon to be Pokerstars’ sister company, Sisal, places third on the podium at 7.93% share and Lottomatica comes in fourth place.
Sportsbook operators in the online and retail sectors have Snai as the leader for January, with the provider taking a 13.7% share online and 15.2% in the retail market. Sisal secured second place in the online market with a 13.3% market share and Bet365, PlanetWin365, Goldbet, and Eurobet took close to 10% each. Goldbet was breathing down Snai’s neck with a 15.1% share in the retail segment while Sisal and Eurobet placed third and fourth with 13.1% and 11.7% share in the Italian betting retail market.
Pokerstars still have the upper hand on any poker operator and dominate Italy’s tournaments with more than 50% market share, while they claim 42.74% of the cash poker segment.
