Sports Betting in Colorado is Now Live in Hopes for Relaunch of Sports
By Jeff Osienya May 03, 2020 IndustryColorado sports betting debuts with one of the most comprehensive coverages of sports events in the state. Locals have over 1,000 betting options across 40 different sports including eSports.Online sports betting officially became legal in the Centennial state starting 1st May, despite the shutdown of all the major sporting competitions in the US and across the globe. The Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission has kept its word by ensuring it met its 1st May launch date against all odds. Finally, the journey that started back in November 2019 when Colorado voters passed Proposition DD by a narrow margin in a state-wide referendum has come to fruition.
Now that locals can start placing sports wagers in the state, Colorado becomes the 18th state in the USA to accept legal sports wagers. Moreover, the Centennial state joins six other US states that accept fully-fledged mobile betting within their boundaries, meaning that you don’t have to be physically located in a betting shop to place bets via a mobile app in the state.
The other states which accept full mobile betting in the country are Oregon, Indiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. However, Oregon, like Colorado, is the only other state in the west of the Mississippi River where you can bet on the go without ever having to be physically present in a casino.
A Handful of Sportsbooks are Already Live
While we expect over 30 different sportsbooks to start operating in Colorado, a handful of sports betting brands have already set sails in the local market. The Rocky Mountain State led the way on Friday, going live with 4 different sportsbooks while 13 more under the same partner are in the pipeline for launch having received a license from the state regulator.
FanDuel also brought its A-game via a mobile app, in collaboration with Twin River’ Black Hawk based affiliate, the Golden Gates Casino. This is the 5th state where FanDuel has established a footprint in the gaming market. Likewise, DraftKings, the newly Nasdaq-listed company unveiled its sportsbook in conjunction with Mardi Gras Casino, another Twin River associate in Black Hawk.
Roar Digital’s sports betting brand, BetMGM also launched its sports betting product in partnership with Triple Crown affiliated Midnight Rose Hotel & Casino situated in Cripple Creek, after an exclusive primary skin deal signed by both companies. Roar Digital is a joint venture between UK’s GVC Holdings and MGM Resorts, a casino operator based in Las Vegas. Similarly, BetRivers, the Rush Street Interactive’s sportsbook product also went live in the Centennial State, under JP McGill’s Hotel & Casino, another Triple Crown operated casino also based in Cripple Creek.
Which Sports Can You Bet on in Colorado?
With such big names already accepting bettors in the state, locals will have abundant betting options to back their favorite teams. Official regulations currently allow betting on up to 40 different categories in sports and over 1,000 types of sports betting wagers.
Of course, fan favorites like the NBA and NFL are okayed as well as the likes of MLB, golf, soccer, handball, rugby, winter sports, MMA and motorsports. However, the most impressive thing about the vast catalog of sports accepted for wagering is the presence of eSports. Licensed sports betting operators are allowed to offer betting options on eight different eSports leagues which are; League of Legends, Overwatch, DOTA2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six, E-Nascar and NBA2K.
After the widespread sports shutdown, it only made sense for the Colorado regulator to allow placing wagers on video games, alongside West Virginia and Nevada. However, from the long catalog of accepted sports, locals in Colorado won’t be allowed to place wagers on any college athletics. Still, things could probably change as the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission plans to meet later this month for further discussions on the collegiate sports subject.
